I am a great fan of The Apprentice show, featuring Sir Alan Sugar and the hapless lot of "contestants" after a JOB at the end of the day. I am a true believer in learning from the best, and Sir Alan is most certainly a proven case. But the girls this year, oh my goodness me, the bickering has been unbearable, embarrassing and down right self destructive.
One of the biggest benefits in lateral thinking is understanding that people's views on things are quite simply how they feel at that time about the subject. If in conversation with another person on a topic that you have a polar opposite viewpoint about, most people try and stand their ground and argue their point to the other person to the point where one or the other feels they have "won" the argument.
If you begin to understand that neither person is wrong, and in fact both are right, they just have different thoughts and feelings about something, then you can usually create a better sense of harmony. People just have views, that's it.
The girls on the apprentice this series have demonstrated no such balance and as a result have spent all their energy squabbling with each other instead of trying to be a better apprentice. Not one of them has so far demonstrated what they have learned from the experience, and an inability to understand how you can better yourself is an inability to grow. This will hold you back in life.
So the next time you find yourself in the early stages of a heated debate about something, start the sentence with something balanced like , " I understand your point of view on that, however I feel this way about the same thing, I'm not saying who is right or wrong, we both obviously have a strong view on this but my understanding is this. "
If you keep calm yourself, you will find greater rewards. It's a hard one to master, but practice it with your work colleagues and you will see good results.
